Smythe Stores is a boutique historic condominium, known for its distinctive cast-iron façade and loft-like residences with high ceilings, exposed beams, and oversized windows. The elevator building offers 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom homes, with select penthouses featuring balconies. Restored for residential use in the mid-1980s, Smythe Stores combines genuine Old City architecture with an exceptionally walkable location.

Outline
Old City Loft Living
This historic Old City condominium building offers the kind of architectural character that draws buyers to the neighborhood, with residences featuring elements such as high ceilings, exposed beams and brick, oversized arched windows, and wood-burning fireplaces. Floor plans vary, including loft-style and bi-level residences, giving the building considerably more personality than a typical newer condominium.
The building is pet-friendly, offers relatively low condo fees, and sits in a highly walkable Old City location convenient to restaurants, shopping, public transportation, I-95, and the Delaware River waterfront. The location should become even more appealing with the completion of the new Park at Penn’s Landing, planned as an 11.5-acre public space connecting Old City more directly with the waterfront. For buyers who prefer historic architecture and true loft character over a more conventional high-rise condominium, this is a building worth knowing.

Two Cents
What I like most about Smythe Stores is that it actually looks and feels like Old City. The building’s cast-iron façade is unlike anything you’ll find at most Center City condominiums, and that character continues inside with oversized windows and exposed beamed ceilings. The building was restored in the mid-1980s and offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom residences, along with an elevator. The penthouses have balconies overlooking Arch Street.
The location at Front and Arch Streets, directly across from 108 Arch, puts you right in the heart of Old City. For buyers who want genuine historic character rather than a newer building trying to recreate it, Smythe Stores is one I think is worth knowing.
